Great service with amazing food. Nicely portioned & reasonably priced. The rib tips are my go to & are always tender, juicy, and full of flavor. The owners are down to earth, and you can tell that they are passionate about cooking their food. Give them a try. The food never disappoints!
Overview
If you ever find yourself cruising down 6333 GA-42 in Rex, Georgia, chances are the smoky aroma wafting through the air will guide you straight to Freddie Mac’s Bbq. This unassuming spot has become a beloved local favorite, where the essence of Southern barbecue is not just served-it’s celebrated. What makes it special isn’t just the food, but the heart, warmth, and authentic experience that come with every plate.
Walking through the doors feels like stepping into a friend’s backyard cookout. The walls echo with laughter, the scent of oak-smoked ribs fills the air, and the counter staff greet you with genuine Southern hospitality. Having eaten here several times, I can say the consistency is what keeps people coming back. Each bite tells a story of slow cooking, patience, and a passion that’s been perfected over years. The ribs are tender enough to fall off the bone, their caramelized crust perfectly balancing sweet, smoky, and spicy. The pulled pork, slow-smoked for hours, practically melts in your mouth and pairs beautifully with their house-made tangy sauce.
One of the best parts about visiting Freddie Mac’s is how the menu captures both tradition and creativity. You’ll find classic items like brisket, smoked chicken, and collard greens, but there are also surprises like barbecue nachos and loaded baked potatoes that have become local legends. Everything is made fresh daily, and the sides-especially the mac and cheese-taste like they came straight from grandma’s kitchen. In fact, the mac and cheese has such a loyal following that it’s often the first item to sell out during the lunch rush.
From a culinary standpoint, what stands out most is their smoking process. Pitmaster Freddie uses a blend of hickory and oak wood, ensuring a steady burn that infuses every cut of meat with a deep, complex flavor. According to the National Barbecue Association, the ideal smoking temperature for pork is around 225°F, allowing the fat to render slowly and the connective tissue to break down for ultimate tenderness. Freddie Mac’s approach reflects that level of craftsmanship perfectly-this isn’t fast food, it’s slow, soulful cooking done right.
Local reviews have been overwhelmingly positive, with customers praising both the food and the family-like atmosphere. On platforms like Yelp and Google Reviews, diners frequently mention the generous portions and fair prices, noting that it’s rare to find a spot that delivers both quality and authenticity without pretension. Many regulars claim it’s the best barbecue in Clayton County, and after tasting it myself, it’s hard to argue.
The restaurant’s location at 6333 GA-42, Rex, GA 30273, United States, makes it an easy stop for both locals and travelers passing through. I was referred to Freddie Mac BBQ in Morrow, GA by a friend, and my experience was fantastic from start to finish. On my first visit, they happened to be closed for vacation. I called the number listed and left a message, and to my surprise, the owner, Ms. Tracy, personally called me back to apologize. I told her I wasn’t a local but planned to visit on my return trip, and she warmly encouraged me to come by. When I finally made it in, the food did not disappoint. The pork ribs were tender and bursting with flavor, and the homemade BBQ sauce was truly one of a kind. The burger was juicy and cooked to perfection. I’m not usually a macaroni and cheese fan, but theirs was hands-down one of the best I’ve ever had; rich, creamy, and unforgettable. The food, the service, and the personal touch make Freddie Mac BBQ a true gem. I would recommend them to anyone without hesitation.
Been in Stockbridge for years and visited this establishment for the first time yesterday and was not disappointed. I ordered the footlong pork sausage and rib dinner with baked beans and potato salad. I enjoyed the smoky flavored ribs that were fully cooked, the tasty baked beans and the potato salad. That sausage was so good on that soft bun, that I ate half after it had gotten cold. The cornbread was like moist cake. They were even nice enough to bring my order out to my car. I will visit here again.
My co-worker has been talking about this place for three days and now I see why!!! When I say everything was good, I mean EVERYTHING!! The Collards. The mac and cheese. The potato salad. EVERYTHING!!! And the service was wonderful. The mom, son and daughter were so nice!!!! I'll definitely be back!!!!
I knew the food was gonna hit the moment I entered the building it’s sooooo good yall. The cornbread melts in your mouth. The chicken falls of the bone the Mac and cheese ooey gooey cheeseyness just everything. Definitely going to become a regular after this. 10/10
I bought the ribs combo with Mac and cheese and greens. The ribs were so tender and smokey, they just needed a little bit more seasoning for me. The Mac and cheese was cheesey and seasoned very well. The greens had a lot of stems but it really do matter because they were very tender. The only thing that they could really improve is the cornbread. It fell apart as soon as I tried to pick it up. I will definitely be going back
